Is buying expired domain names such a good idea?
Ok, here is my rant:
Is buying an old expired domain name such a good idea?
Well, I would say: it depends…
If you are a professional site-Flipper it’s most likely good for you to find an interesting domain name with long history as you are not going to keep it anyway.
However, if you are looking for getting a site for your own long term business and you think that buying and old domain name will be a good idea how to avoid so called Google Sandbox I would tell you to be Careful What you are doing.
Why? Because the old domain names which have been ‘live’ online for some time have that nasty tendency getting enormous amount of spam mails!
Are You Ready and willing to deal with something like that?
I know it first hand by myself. I’ve just let to expire 1 of my oldest domain names, because the spam which it was getting was almost unbearable! And even I canceled the “catch-all” email on my server, and had my mail pre-washed through gmail, the amount of spam was just disgusting.
Of course this particular domain name wasn’t something which I’ve paid too much attention to over the years; but it has been developed to a certain point, had probably couple of hundred pages, but I’ve let it expired anyway.
So before you jump on buying that fabulous expired domain name you’ve just found stop and think: is that Really such a good idea to buy this old name?
Then do your research and find out How was that site managed over the years.
I personally have a hard time to believe that any “valuable site” which has been worked on/developed over the years would be let expired, Just because the owner “forgot” to renew it.
So always Compare ‘what’ has a greater ‘value’ for your long term business: a couple of backlinks each site eventually develops over the years, but being basically without a proper email – or having a new clean domain name you can protect from the beginning.

I made a video showing how you can use to quickly scan through thousands of expired domain names to find the ones that still have link popularity.
